Functional Orthodontic Appliances

To address an overbite due to a difference in jaw size in a growing patient, a functional orthodontic appliance is often our treatment of choice. These appliances utilize the muscle action of the patient to express the lower jaw growth in a more horizontal direction. The Frankel functional appliance is an example that stimulates the growth of the lower jaw, helping to better align both the jaws and the teeth. It is typically worn at home for a duration of approximately 14 hours a day.
